Instructors are responsible for managing the inventory and care of instructional materials. Instructors should stress the importance of taking care of and respecting equipment on the first day of class. Instructors should ensure that storage areas are tidy, accessible, and secure, keeping in mind this area is most likely shared. At the end of the semester, instructors must inventory UMN supplied equipment at the end of each class meeting.
Ordering New Equipment
To request new class equipment, instructors must submit a request by filling out the Purchase Request Form. To complete this form, instructors will need to research the equipment purchase in advance and identify a vendor selling the product at the lowest cost. Completed forms can be emailed as PDF attachments to the Responsible Faculty for review and further approval. Responsible Faculty will forward to our purchasing specialist once the form is approved. If needed, hard copies can be left in the Responsible Faculty's mailbox in Cooke 228.
Student-Supplied Equipment
Responsible Faculty must approve any equipment that students are expected to purchase, and students must be informed of equipment requirements before the start of the course.
For Responsible Faculty approval, instructors must email the Responsible Faculty five months prior to the start of the semester indicating:
- The equipment students need to provide, including product, brand, quantity, and other descriptors
- The purpose of the equipment for the course
- At least four local or online, low-cost vendors that sell the equipment, including the vendor’s name, Web site, phone number, and the approximate cost of the equipment
- The vendor/purchasing method the instructor will recommend to the students Overall approximate cost of the equipment per student
Once the instructor has received the Responsible Faculty approval, the list of equipment, four local or online, low-cost vendors, and approximate cost must be included in the course syllabus and should be emailed to all students at least one week prior to the start of the semester.
